Gruntled Berry Weiße
Brewed: 2/1/2015 Kegged: 2/14/2015

You may remember the story about how Gruntled Sour Weiße came into being. I had come across a recipe by Billy at The Homebrew Academy for a Gose (see Gose Homebrew Recipe) in which he sours at bottling time with 10 tsp of 88% lactic acid.
I decided to try the same technique for my own Sour Weiße. I soured to taste, but I over-did it a bit. Still, it was nice to blend with other beers to add some tartness.
Superbowl weekend I decided I wanted to do a little batch of beer. Since I had most recently done the Gruntled Sour Weiße at a small size, I decided to simply re-use most of that recipe. This time I thought it would be fun to throw in some mixed berries to add some fruitiness.
At the time that I did the recipe, I knew I would add less lactic acid than I did with the Gruntled Sour. I wasn't 100% sure I'll add any. The bottling-time decision was to add the amount I was planning to for the first beer.
I liked how the resulting beer turned out. I don't really consider it a sour beer. The lactic acid does add some tartness, which compliments the mixed berries quite well. Generally speaking, I don't go out of my way for fruit beers, but this one is a nice refreshing low alcohol beer. It is really quite pleasurable to drink.
Even the Beer Model doesn't think its too sour.

Frozen berries added to fermenter. Rack the wort right on top.
Got the idea of using lactic acid at bottling time from Billy at The Homebrew Academy http://homebrewacademy.com/gose-homebrew-recipe
Starting off with 5 tsp. Will taste to see if I think I should add more.
Carb to about 2.9 vol with 2.4oz table sugar boiled in 1 cup water.

Brewing Notes
2/6/2015 Geeze. Can't believe I still have not commented on this. Brew day went ok. See Gruntled Berry Weiße on the blog. Have not really been paying attention to the fermentation. Started at 60ish it is now around 68 and there doesn't seem to be any activity. I am assuming it did its thing while I wasn't paying attention.
2/8/2015 Took a sample. It is very pink. The berry flavor is much more subtle than the color contribution. Think this will actually compliment the lactic sour nicely. 1.008 gravity.
2/14/2015 Bottled the pink beer today with 2.5oz table sugar. 13 12oz bottles. 2 bombers. 1 PET liter bottle. 1.007 fg. 3%abv. I really like how the very flavor and the lactic sour play together. Much less tart than Gruntled Sour Weiße. Think this will be a pleasant easy drinking beer in a couple weeks.
2/21/2015 PET is rock-hard. One more week of carbonation and we'll see how it turned out.
2/28/2015 Put some bottles in the fridges. Should drink some tomorrow.
3/2/2015 Had some yesterday. Lots of berry flavor. A little tart, but not what I would call sour. Pretty good. Not great.
5/5/2015 Had a bomber over the weekend. I think I liked this beer better than the last time I had it. It really is pretty good. Nice tartness is almost, but not quite sour. Lots of berry flavor. Pretty nice.
9/20/2015 Had one with PC last night. Tastes about the same as before. PC was not a fan. Said it tastes more like wine to him.
10/18/2015 I think this beer is all gone.
10/18/2015 Actually, I have some in the beer fridge.
4/30/2016 Past its prime for sure, but stil lactic and fruity. Still pretty good.
5/1/2016 Think I finished off the last of these blending with Melting Stream. Really like the blend.
