Dubbel Minor
Brewed: 2/25/2023 Kegged: 3/12/2023
Way back starting in 2012, I decided to make an effort to brew beers in BJCP categories that I had not brewed yet. (see SheppyBrew Styles).

Then, the BJCP Guidelines changed.
Late 2022, I discovered that they guidelines had changed enough that I had no longer brewed at least one beer in every category (see BJCP 2021 Style Guidelines).
I brewed Doodle Bop Belgium Single to satisfy the 26 Monastic Ale category, and harvested that yeast.
Shortly after, my friend Du wanted to host a brew day at his house, and I thought that would be a good time to use the harvested yeast on another Belgium beer. I decided to design a Belgium Dubbel.
This is that recipe.
"Dubbel Minor" is a bit of a pun inspired by my favorite spectator sport. It is named after a double minor penalty.
I thought it was clever. Unless I'm missing one, it looks like untappd doesn't have any commercial beers with the same name. It looks like a single homebrewer came up with the same idea.
Anyway ... the SheppyBrew version should be ready to drink in March of 2023.
A deep reddish-copper, moderately strong, malty, complex Belgian ale with rich malty flavors, dark or dried fruit esters, and light alcohol blended together in a malty presentation that finishes fairly dry.

Brewing Notes
2/24/2023 Picked up ingredients yesterday. Making yeast starter today. Brew day up at Du's house tomorrow.
2/26/2023 Brew day went well. Du hosted a fun event. Started fermentation in a hotel room.
2/26/2023 Fermentation started strong overnight. Getting ready to drive home and combine two carboys into one fermenter.
2/26/2023 Everything combined. Lots more wort than I thought. Tilt says 1.055 at 67 right now.
2/28/2023 Tilt says 1.010 at 70 degrees. This is probably the FG. Still needs clarification time. I might be able to keg this weekend.
3/12/2023 Kegging today. Tilt said 1.008.
3/12/2023 Hydrometer also at 1.008. Nice beer. Fairly clean for a Belgium. Malty. Fairly dry. A little pear ester. Yum. 😋
3/15/2023 Carbonation getting close. Beautiful beer. Tasty. Dangerously easy drinking.
3/31/2023 Really nice drinking beer. Smooth Belgium flavor. Lighter in color than I usually think of Dubbels, but I think it's in range. Higher in alcohol than it tastes.
4/5/2023 Starting to really clarify. Great Beer
4/14/2023 Yummy. I think if I make this again, I'll add a little more Special B for a little darker color and more dark fruit flavor. The "Belgium" flavor is pretty subtle. A little pear ester and today I detected just a hint of bubblegum. Dangerously smooth. Great beer.
4/28/2023 Dry and drinkable. Now I think maybe I don't want more Special B. Really nice beer.
4/29/2023 The keg blew tonight. Didn't realize it was so close to empty. Need to brew more beer to get my inventory up. Great beer while it lasted.
