Jolly Morlock Brown Porter
Brewed: 11/3/2013 Kegged: 11/16/2013
I went back and forth as to whether I wanted to do a 12A. Brown Porter or a 12B. Robust Porter. Eventually, I just decided that I wanted the softer, sweeter and more caramelly flavors of the Brown. I figure that if I keep the roast down, the SheppyBrew Beer Model may actually like it as well.
I designed the recipe around mostly English (Simpson's) malts. The base malt is Golden Promise and there is a good amount of Medium Crystal. For the color, I used mostly Briess Blackprinz malt for a less astringent, smoother black character, but I threw in some Chocolate Malt just to get a bit of the more stout-like roast. Most of my English Fuggle hops are in the First Wort Hopping, which should impart a decent amount of earthy English hop flavor to the beer at the same time it balances out the malt sweetness with bitterness.
I came up with the name thanks to my kids. Over the GABF weekend, they stayed with some friends and got to watch the 1960 version of The Time Machine. Apparently, they really liked it. I remember loving the movie as a kid, although now I don't remember much about it other than how utterly frightening the Morlocks were in the movie. As this beer was going to be dark I thought using the underground dwelling Morlocks in the name would work nice. But I also threw on the adjective "Jolly" as a little juxtaposition. This beer can make even the evil, grumpy Morlocks happy and jolly.

Anyway, I think I'll really like this beer. We will see.

Brewing Notes
11/4/2013 Brewed yesterday. Everything went about perfect except I forgot to add the chalk to the water. I added it straight to the mash instead. Fermentation is going pretty strong this morning at 66 degrees.
11/6/2013 Kraussen is starting to die. I put in a blow-off tube, but never needed it. The fermentation was not as violent as it usually is. Temperature is at 72 right now.
11/7/2013 Took a little sample. Smooth and chocolaty. Real nice dark brown ... maybe even black. Good balance. 1.016 on the gravity making this 4.7ABV right now. Would like to see it a bit lower on the FG for about a 5% beer. So far, so good.
11/12/2013 Took another sample. 1.014 puts this right at 5%ABV. Really nice chocolate with not much roast. Very smooth. Clarity seems really good, although it is dark enough that you really cannot see through it. I consider this a perfect porter.
11/16/2013 Kegged today. Also filled 12 12oz bottles. Still at 1.014 making this a 5% ABV beer. Wonderful taste. Looking forward to drinking.
12/6/2013 Tried first taste from keg. Very nice.Lots of chocolate in flavor and aroma.Nice balance. Pretty good head. Could probably use a bit more carbonation Great beer.
12/14/2013 Loving this beer. Nice and smooth. The carbonation is right where I want it. Wonderful.
12/20/2013 Brought most of my bottles into work today. Will see if anyone gives me any feedback.
12/21/2013 At the end of the workday, I popped open one. It foamed up more than I would have liked, but it was absolutely fantastic. Love this beer.
12/31/2013 Love this beer. Great flavor. Nice and smooth. Been sharing it and it has been pretty popular ... especially considering it is an "evil dark beer". Going to have to make this one lots.
1/4/2014 Putting back into keggerator. Not much left. Going to have to be soon.
7/25/2014 Found a bottle in the beer fridge. Still tastes yummy. More chocolate than I remember from before.
