Ello Poppet Czech Pilsner
Brewed: 2/19/2017 Kegged: 3/5/2017

I really like the Pirates of the Caribbean movies ... especially the first one. When Pintel and Ragetti find Elizabeth in the closet, Ragetti looks through the crack of the door and says "Ello Poppet" (hello poppet). For some reason, once when I was watching the movie I thought that would be a cool name for a beer. Not sure why.
But, when I decided to make a Bohemian Pilsner, I was not really able to come up with a better name, so I am using it. If you have a problem with my choice of names, bring it up with the owner of the brewery.
The idea for this beer came after drinking Sam Adams Noble Pils. I really liked the fresh hop flavor and I decided I would love to make a very hop-forward Bohemian Pilsner of my own. I had a gift certificate for Mr. Beer, and I decided as part of my order I would buy all the different kinds of noble hops that they carry. To get that burst of flavor and aroma, I am just throwing them all in at the end of the boil.
The bittering hops were just used because I had partial bags of Columbus and Chinook.
The grain bill is mostly German pilsner malt and a bit of Cara-pils. I was going to throw in Caravienne because beersmith said I needed some color to get to be proper for a pilsner. I decided to leave it out, though.

Because I had some, I added Clarity-Ferm to the fermentation to clear the beer. As a result, this beer will be gluten-reduced.
The flavor really turned out wonderful. I am not sure the hops "pop" as much as they do in Noble Pils, but it is hoppy and wonderful. I also really love the malt flavor and body of the beer. My only complaint about this first batch is that it is significantly hazy. I don't think it is a protein haze since I used the clarity-ferm, so I am assuming it is a hop haze. I will have to research how to reduce this next beer. Of course, it is so delicious, maybe I should leave it as is.

Brewing Notes
2/20/2017 Brewed yesterday. OG pretty low at 1.046. That's ok. Lower abv is fine on this beer.
3/9/2017 1st and 2nd pour. 1st was really full of yeast, which surprised me. 2nd was better. Delicious. Nice hop character. Good carbonation. Could use some settling time for clarity. Not going to let that stop me from drinking it this weekend.
4/6/2017 Both the wife and I have been enjoying this beer for a few weeks now. Great noble hop flavor.
4/20/2017 The keg blew tonight. Didn't realize it was so close to empty. Weird that I didn't get many comments in for this batch. Great beer. Too bad it's gone.
